Project 3: Process

Project 3 :: Process  (due Mon April 16th)

Your project is to create a Process, and use it to generate a series of at least 3 images.  Use the same process for each image in the series (but use different source materials or allow other variations each time).

For this project, all source material must be your own – such as digital photographs that you shoot yourself, film photography that you shoot yourself and scan, drawings that you make on the computer, drawings that you make and scan, etc.

Each final image should have a resolution of at least 1024×768 300dpi. Higher resolution is ok.

In this assignment we will consider how artists create images by implementing external processes, rather than being guided by personal intention. Process-based digital photography references both the long history of process art in conceptual art and the fact that the main tool for digital imaging – the computer – is itself based on instruction. Examples of processes include additive processes, subtractive processes, chance processes, instructional processes, and combinatorial processes.

You will develop a rule set which will guide your operations and will help you to produce the work. In creating process art, you are an agent of the process you design.

A “Process” is a set of rules that you use to generate the images.  It can be applied to both the steps that you use to manipulate the final images, and also to the steps that you use to create or generate the source images.

Additive Process : repeated addition of material according to a set of rules

Subtractive Process : removal and deletion according to rules

Chance Process : choice of actions, choice of marks, selection of images, determined by chance

Translation or Encoding Process : translating material from one form to another.  Translating musical notes to colors, encoding text as images, etc.  All digital data is just data; images, sound files, text files, programs, they’re all just numbers …

Instruction Set: a general process, just setting out any set of rules to follow.

Evaluation

Your work will be evaluated based on your achievement of technical and creative concepts, thoughtfulness, attention to detail, effort, and originality of approach. I will be looking for these elements in your images and your statements. As always, you are encouraged to take risks and try new things.

Turn In:

  1. Writeup explaining the process / rule set
